A lot of freshers out there don’t know the
first thing about showmanship and performance. Now this isn’t something that
you’re born with and for the most part is learned along the way. But there are
a couple of tips that you can implement within your sets now that will already
give you an extra edge within the world of DJing.
Know
the other DJs
I’m not saying that you should know them
personally but at least know what they are going to play. If you are the
warm-up DJ then you should know who follows your act in order to leave the
crowd ready for him or her. The same goes if someone else opens up for you,
based on how they end their set, you can use those elements to put it in your
intro in order to help the crowd transition from one set to another.
What
are you doing on stage?
People are visual in nature and even though
they came to “listen” to you, they also came to “see” you. This means that you
shouldn’t just be a static DJ playing music; you should become a performer as
well. What are you doing that is visually appealing and helps you magnify the
effect of your music. You could have a gimmick like DeadMou5 or have visuals
projected on a screen, it’s up to you.

Use
professional Software
You can’t be performing on freeware so
before you’re even thinking about getting onstage, invest in some good Dubstep
software in order to sound as professional as you can. I know there are lots of
freebies out there, but the fact of the matter is that if you want to make it
in this industry; you’ll have to invest in your own production value. The
correct software is essential to your survival.
More
beats less music
Being a DJ you don’t have to make a song
that has a chorus, lyrics and so forth. In fact your tracks should be more
based on the beats than on the melody due to the fact people like to come to
your shows to dance. You don’t need to woo them, you don’t need to impress them
with the arrangements…you need to make them jump and bounce like they have
never done before. So instead try to make more complex and catchy beats.
Have
fun
If you’re not having fun, then the crowd
won’t have fun as well. The trick to having a brilliant performance comes down
to the confidence and joy that one has when doing a live act. Don’t worry about
making mistakes, even the best makes mistakes. Don’t worry about being flawless
in your execution, just simply try to make a deep connection with your fans and
give them the best show of your life every single performance. This way people
will realize that when you’re in the house…the party has just arrived.
